COVID-19 Protocols

SMS Families,

We hope all of you are having a safe and healthy summer. Scottsdale Miss Softball is continuing to prepare for a Fall 2020 season. We greatly appreciate those that replied to the survey to help us shape the season. SMS is working to prepare a return to play based on the guidelines from USA Softball, the CDC and the State of Arizona. Based on all of this, we wanted to pass along some information. Here is a summary and more detail is available below.

  • As long as there are enough teams per division (4), SMS plans to start practices the week of September 21st, with games starting around October 17th. There will be games during the week to help us get to an 8 to 10 game schedule. The challenge may be with getting fields, as we cannot use school fields due to school closures, and the City of Scottsdale may not allow the use of City fields.

  • SMS has developed a COVID-19 protocol based on the recommendations of USA Softball. For more details on team responsibilities and in-game procedures, please see below.

  • Should a player or coach test positive for COVID-19, SMS will require following the CDC recommendation and AZDHS for quarantine and for anyone that has had close contact.

  • For more details, see More Details below

Registration will be open through September 13th, and refunds processed through the same date. Once registration closes and teams are formed, SMS will not process refunds unless it cannot field a division or if the City cannot provide fields.

Should you have any questions, please email and we will respond as soon as possible.

Thank you for your continued support of Scottsdale Miss Softball and for your patience. We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the health and safety of the players, coaches, and familes are at the forefront of every decision we make, while getting the girls back to the game they love!

Construct of Fall Season

  • In order to make the Fall 2020 season work, SMS believes we need a minimum of 4 teams per division. Please keep in mind that the team structure may look different from prior seasons (i.e. teams may not be the same as before) as we limit the number of players per team and organize teams based on registrations.
  • The goal is to start practicing around September 21st, with games in October and November. The goal is to have 8 – 10 games as we would for a traditional Fall season.
  • Based on your feedback, we will not have double headers; however, there will be games scheduled during the week.
  • SMS normally has limited fields in the Fall, and right now, we cannot use school fields. The City of Scottsdale is also restricting the use of other fields at Horizon and Thompson Peak Park. If this continues, we would not be able to play a season.

Game Experience

  • SMS has developed a COVID-19 protocol based on the recommendations of USA Softball.
  • Each team will designate a COVID prevention parent for each game who is responsible for the team dugout; sanitizing the dugout, first row of bleachers, game balls (if not still in wrapping), etc. before and during the game.
  • Each team will have 2 softballs for use while on defense. SMS will provide a mesh basket that will hang near the dugout. Between each inning (while batting), the softballs will be sprayed and left to dry. Each team will use it’s own set of softballs.
  • A limited number of players are allowed in the dugout, and the other players will distance on the first row of the bleachers or behind the dugout.
  • Parents will be asked to watch games from the side fences or in their own chairs behind the bleachers. Bleachers are not to be used per the City of Scottsdale. There is no sitting behind home plate.
  • USA Softball and other organizations have been successfully conducting tournaments all summer, and SMS is hoping to use the success from these tournaments for the Fall season.
  • Each team should have hand sanitizer, spray and wipes available for players and coaches to use during the game.
  • Encourage players to remind each other to avoid touching their face.
  • Each player must have their own water and equipment.

What If?

  • Should a player or coach test positive for COVID-19, the CDC recommends the player quarantine for 10 days from the first sign of a symptom. That player or coach must be fever and symptom free without medication for 24 hours before resuming activity.
  • Anyone that has had close contact (within six feet of each other for a prolonged period, such as 15 minutes or more) they are to stay quarantined for 14 days and must be symptom free without medication for 24 hours before resuming activity.
  • Anyone not having close contact should monitor for any symptoms and act according to CDC guidelines.
  • It is the responsibility of the parent and player to immediately alert the coach of any symptoms or of a positive test. The coach must then immediately notify the Division Coordinator, who in turn will notify the SMS COVID Response Leader so they can initiate protocols for tracing and communication.
  • SMS will not require everyone to be tested.

  • Registration is open until September 13th.
  • Should you decide to skip Fall season, we completely understand, and will refund your registration fee up until registration closes.
  • Once Registration closes and teams are formed, there will not be any refunds.
  • The only exception to this is if SMS cannot field enough teams for a division or if the City cannot provide fields.
  • Any other decisions on refunds are at the sole discretion of the SMS Board.
